Eastwood Homes Proves Home is Where the Heart Is
The fall of 2021 marked a special milestone in the premier home builder’s 13-year partnership with Atrium Health Levine Children’s as Eastwood Homes surpassed $1 million in charitable support raised to benefit the hospital, including ongoing support for the Eastwood Homes hospitality cart. The cart, which circulates throughout eight floors of Levine Children’s Hospital, provides patients and their families with the comforts of home – healthy snacks, reading materials, gifts, toiletries, and more – at no cost to families.
Eastwood Homes’ support has extended beyond the Hospitality Cart in recent years to include additional support for the Seacrest Studios – an in-house multi-media center and radio station that brings the gifts of music and broadcasting to patients – as well as the Atrium Health’s Essential Needs Fund and Teammate Emergency Care Fund in response to Covid-19. These gifts and resources continue to prove invaluable to Levine Children’s patients and their families.
Movement Mortgage Employees Pay Tribute to Fellow Colleague through Charitable Gift
Last October, Movement Mortgage presented a check for $10,000 to Levine Children’s Hospital as a moving tribute to their colleague, Leigh, whose family is no stranger to the hospital. Leigh’s daughter, Mary, underwent a nephrectomy – a major surgery to remove one of her kidneys – earlier this year and continues to be seen by her medical team at Levine Children’s.
To ensure more children have access to the best kidney care possible, Movement Mortgage has designated $2,000 to the Pediatric Nephrology Center of Excellence at Levine Children’s. The remaining funds will support the areas of greatest need within the hospital.
Bojangles Pays Homage to its Hometown Team and Quarterback in a Big BO Way
For the weekend of November 20-21, Bojangles, the official Tailgate Headquarters of the Panthers, extended its black-and-blue store wrap and donated 20 percent of gameday sales to Atrium Health Levine Children’s. The gift and occasion paid homage to our hometown team and the return of the Panthers’ #1 quarterback, Cam Newton.
Daimler Truck North America’s “Team Pink” Helps to Advance Ovarian Cancer Research in the Carolinas
Through the DaimlerCares program, employees of Daimler Truck North America in Cleveland, NC raise funds annually to benefit numerous cancer causes and initiatives in our region. In 2021, under the banner of Team Pink, Daimler employees selected Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute as the beneficiary of their fundraising. The leading commercial vehicle manufacturer raised $4,000 to benefit the Carolinas Ovarian Cancer Fund at LCI, helping to advance ovarian cancer research, detection, and patient care initiatives.

LEVINE CANCER INSTITUTE PATIENT SPECIAL NEEDS FUND
Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute is committed to helping meet the healthcare needs of the medically underserved members of our community. Our goal is simple – to provide the highest level of cancer care possible, regardless of a patient’s financial situation. Cancer treatment can place tremendous emotional, physical, and financial stresses on patients and their families. LCI understands that these burdens associated with cancer care can be overwhelming.
The Levine Cancer Institute Patient Special Needs Fund provides partial, short-term assistance to help eligible patients with costs such as household bills, transportation, prosthetic devices, and temporary lodging for themselves or family members. By contributing to the LCI Patient Special Needs Fund, corporate and individual benefactors play a vital role in supporting patients with extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
THE CENTERING PARENTING PROGRAM
Atrium Health’s Community Clinic Myers Park cares for a significant number of low-income and vulnerable patients through its Centering Parenting Program. Atrium Health’s evidence-based Centering Parenting program has been shown to improve birth outcomes, promote parent engagement, and enhance family stability and community development through group visits and peer support. The program educates, activates, and empowers parents by engaging them in their children’s care, resulting in healthier infants and offering critical peer networks for new parents.
THE LEVINE CHILDREN’S SPECIALTY OUTPATIENT CENTER
At the Levine Children’s Outpatient Specialty Center, our world revolves around children. With the continued investment of our community, Levine Children’s will achieve its commitment to meet the needs of every infant, child, or adolescent in our community who faces a critical or chronic medical condition. The expansion of the outpatient Specialty Center will allow Levine Children’s to help patients and their families live their healthiest and brightest lives. More than 30 medical specialties are provided in the Specialty Center.
Philanthropic support helps to: underwrite research and medical innovations; renovate and expand the Center’s specialty clinics and infrastructure; recruit and retain the best and brightest medical minds, and provide essential patient and family support programs.

Transformational Gift Sets Pace for New Medical School Campus
Howard R. Levine Foundation to name signature academic building.
Atrium Health will break ground on Wake Forest University School of Medicine Charlotte next year, with the first class scheduled to be seated in 2024. Earlier this month, Atrium Health Foundation announced a $25 million gift from the Howard R. Levine Foundation to name the signature academic building, located in the heart of a new innovation district coming to Midtown. The Howard R. Levine Center for Education will house the school of medicine as well as Wake Forest University School of Business, Wake Forest School for Professional Studies and Carolinas College of Health Sciences, which have also announced plans to locate there. David L. Conlan Center Established at New Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation
A treasured friend and grateful patient family has been honored with a transformational gift that includes support for the new Atrium Health Carolinas Rehabilitation, slated to open in November 2022.
In recognition of the $30 million gift, the David L. Conlan Center will be named at Carolinas Rehabilitation. The late David Conlan was a longtime friend, colleague, and trusted advisor of Charlotte developer and philanthropist Howard C. “Smoky” Bissell, as well as a partner of the Bissell family until his passing in August 2021. Smoky, his wife Margaret, and Bissell Ballantyne – the entity in which he partnered – made the donation to honor the life of Conlan, who was a patient at Atrium Health and benefited from rehabilitative medicine.
In addition to naming the David L. Conlan Center, the Bissell gift will be used to advance the reach, geography, and efficacy of existing and future rehabilitation services and programs offered by Carolinas Rehabilitation, which currently encompasses five inpatient hospitals and 18 outpatient locations. The Charlotte of Tomorrow
Atrium Health President and CEO Eugene A. Woods highlighted the impact of the future Innovation District at the final 2021 Board of Commissioners meeting for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Hospital Authority.
Atrium Health President and CEO Eugene A. Woods unveiled a dramatic glimpse into the future of the Queen City at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Hospital Authority Board of Commissioners’ final meeting of 2021, held on December 7.
The city’s skyline will be transformed after Atrium Health officially opens the Charlotte campus of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in the heart of Midtown and once the development of an adjacent Innovation District transpires.
The Innovation District, a “city-within-a-city,” will transform the surrounding neighborhoods and bring cutting-edge research and innovation to Charlotte, attracting new businesses, and offering new tools to address health disparities. The education building on the campus will also become home to Wake Forest University School of Business, the new Wake Forest School for Professional Studies, and Carolinas College of Health Science.
